Giglini, Anthony
From: Schreiner, Dan
Sent: Wednesday, May 05, 2010 3:59 PM
To: Lathrop, Shelby S (Shaw Environmental, Inc.); Rittenberg, Rick O.; Robert C. Goodman,
Benkosky, Rusty; Giglini, Anthony
Subject: FW: Work Plan for L&M, WOTOA, and Unocal
-----Original Message-----
From: Roberto Cervantes [mailto:RCervantes@waterboards.ca.gov]
Sent: Wednesday, May 05, 2010 3:43 PM
To: Schreiner, Dan
Cc: Ava Kenney; Duncan Austin
Subject: Work Plan for L&M, WOTOA, and Unocal
Dan,
Regional Board staff have reviewed the report entitled "Work Plan for Additional Separate
Phase Hydrocarbon Assessment, Groundwater Recovery Well Installation, and Remedial System
Feasibility Study" submitted by Stantec on behalf of the L and M Group.
The Plan proposes to collect additional geological and petroleum hydrocarbon
characterization data in the WOTOA parking lot area using cone penetrometer (CPT) and
laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) technology. r
Direct push technology will be used to collect some soil samples to verify the accuracy
of the LIF data. The data will be used to optimize the location of future multi-phase
extraction wells to be installed in the WOTOA parking lot area.
The Plan also proposes to install two dual phase extraction wells in the groundwater
collection trenches constructed by the City of Stockton in the Unocal operable unit. The
wells will be used to test the aquifer for groundwater recovery. The wells will be
continuously operated for approximately 72 hours. Each well will be sampled at the
conclusion of the aquifer test. Samples will be analyzed for the following
constituents:
TPH (gasoline, diesel, and oil)
BTEX, MTBE, and TBA
Total organic carbon
Ammonia and Nitrate
Total Phosphate and Ortho Phosphate
Total and Ferrous Iron
The Plan states that EPA method 8015 with silica gel cleanup will be used to test for
TPH. Please use EPA method 8015 without silica gel cleanup. It has been our experience
that we obtain more accurate results without silica gel cleanup.
The Regional Board concurs with the work plan subject to the discussion above. We look
forward to continuing the cleanup activities at the Stockton Waterfront sites. The data
collected during this effort will help guide the groundwater cleanup phase in the area.
Please contact me with any questions or concerns...thanks
Roberto Cervantes, PE, LEED AP
Central Valley Water Board
11020 Sun Center Drive, #200
Rancho Cordova, CA 95670
916.464.4682 direct
1
