1
Soil Suitability/ Nitrate Loading Study Irerracon
Jeremy Winery i.,.- Lodi, CA
May 7, 2019 e, Terracon Project No. NA197008
The OWTS manual sugggests that 15 gallons per person is typical for industrial building
employees which is similar to the proposed winery development and recommends 20 gallons per
person per day for a customer in a bar/cocktail lounge which is similar to a customer in a wine
tasting room.
The following table presents the proposed septic wastewater use for the site. The rates presented
from the references provide general guidance but do not always reflect a match in usage. Should
any of the above information provided to our office change or is inconsistent with what is stated, our
office shall be contacted to make any necessary modifications to our calculations. Examination and
professional judgement, and experience shall be used when selecting a reasonable flowrate.
Table 10.
Typical Quantity of Effluent from Commercial Sources.
Average
Total Effluent
Category People Quantity per Average days Max Daily Flow Average Daily Flow
of use per year (gpd*) (gpd*)
per day Person
(gpd*)
(5 employees x 15 gal.
Employee 5 15 365 5 employees x 15 gal. per day x 365 days per
per day= 75 year)/365 days per year
= 75
(15 customers x 20 gal.
Customers 15 20 365
20 customers x 15 per day x 365 days per
gal. per day= 300 year)/365 days per year
= 300
Special (150 customers x 20 gal.
Event 150 20 5 150 customers x 20 per day x 5 days per
Customers gal. per day= 3,000 year)/365 days per year
=41.1
Total 3,375 gpd 416.10 gpd
*gpd -gallons per day
Based on a review of Table 10, the total maximum daily wastewater quantity is approximately
3,375 gallons per day. As the special events will be held five days per year, a 5/365 conversion
factor was used to calculate the average daily flow for the special events. The total average daily
flow for the project is approximately 416.10 gallons per day.
The average total nitrogen concentration of domestic wastewater is normally considered to be 20
to 85 mg/L-N with 35 to 45 mg/L-N being typical (Crites and Tchobanoglous, 1998). It is estimated
that commercial use will have higher concentrations of total nitrogen when compared to residential
use. For the purposes of the nitrate loading estimate, it is estimated that the average
concentration for total nitrogen in wastewater for the project is approximately 85 mg/L-N over the
long term.
Responsive ■ Resourceful ■ Reliable 16
