CHEVRONTEXACO ENERGY TECHNOLOGY COMPANY
INTEGRATED LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIES DEPARTMENT
PROJECT SUMMARY
Project No. 2004.0076a Requested by Bob Cochran
Dates Initiated 7/1/04 Location CEMC
Date Completed 8/03/04 6001 Bollinger Canyon Road
CRTC Charge Code YWETS0110264 San Ramon, CA
Phone 842-9655
Proleet Description: Analyze three soil samples labeled SB-2-6' (soil), SB-1-6.5' (soil) and SB-3-7' (soil)and
three ground water samples labeled SB-2-GW (groundwater), SB-1-GW (groundwater) and SB-3-GW
(groundwater) from a former Chevron fuel terminal, facility number 302792, located at 541 West Grantline
Road,Tracy,CA. Identify the product and determine if jet fuel is present.
Results:
The samples all contain weathered, evaporated gasoline. The BTEX components have been reduced by
biodegradation and/or evaporation. The light components have largely evaporated. While jet-range
hydrocarbons are present, the samples do not contain jet fuel, rather the chromatograms are dominated by the
heavy ends of gasoline boiling higher than approximately C8. The concentrations of hydrocarbons in the
samples are shown in Table 1. The soil samples are all contaminated to varying degrees by petroleum wax,
the likely source being the sample containers or the sampling apparatus. The contribution from the
petroleum wax is not included in the total concentrations shown in the table.
Table 1. TPH concentrations by GC-FID
Sample Concentration Concentration
in soil in groundwater
m /k
SB-2-6' soil 11.9
SB-1-6.5' soil 11.6
SB-3-7' soil 221
SB-2-GW(groundwater) 2710
SB-1-GW(groundwater) 2620
SB-3-GW undwater 1920
Estimates of the BTEX concentrations are given in Table 2. These are estimates based upon the integrated
peak areas from the GC-FID chromatogram. EPA 8260 is the preferred method of quantification.
Table 2.
