amed -
October
29, 2010
Project 0132900000
Ms. Amy Terrell
California Regional Water Quality Control Board
Central Valley Region
11020 Sun Center Drive, Suite 200
Rancho Cordova, California 95670
Subject: Groundwater Interim Remedial Action Plan
UniFirst Facility, Stockton, California
Dear Ms. Terrell:
On behalf of UniFirst Corporation (UniFirst), AMEC Geomatrix, Inc., is pleased to present the
enclosed Groundwater Interim Remedial Action Plan for the UniFirst facility located at 819 North
I lunter Street in Stockton, California. UniFirst has completed the characterization of the
Chemicals in groundwater from their site. The characterization of the chemicals (chlorinated
volatile organic Compounds [CVOCs]) and a selected remedial alternative, monitored natural
attenuation (MNA), are described in the Groundwater Corrective Action Plan submitted to the
California Regional Water Quality Control Board—Central Valley Region (RWQCB) in April
2010.
In an August 2010 letter to UniFirst, the RWQCB concurred that the CVOCs in groundwater
beneath the site and vicinity are being degraded by natural processes and that MNA is an
appropriate groundwater remediation strategy for the site. However, the RWQCB requested
that UniFirst propose a remediation plan by October 29, 2010, to reduce the mass of CVOCs
in groundwater more rapidly than by natural attenuation alone prior to adopting MNA as the
final groundwater remediation strategy. This Groundwater Interim Remedial Action Plan is
being submitted in response to the RWQCB's request.
UniFirst proposes to implement an in situ remediation method to reduce the mass of CVOCS
in groundwater at the site. UniFirst will conduct a pilot test in the area where CVOC
concentrations in groundwater are the highest to evaluate the effectiveness of this method
and to obtain performance data that could be used for subsequent application to other
locations, if necessary.
AMEC Geomalrix,Inc.
1281 E.Alluvial Avenue,Suite 101
Fresno,California
USA 93720-2659
Tel (559)264-2535
Fax (559)264-7431 AMEC Geomatrix
www.amecgeomairixinc.com
