LINCOLN STREET,
STOCKTON, SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY(REGIONAL BOARD CASE#390825)
i reviewed the Sara Lee Bakery Group, Inc. (Sara Lee) Vapor Intrusion Survey- Soil Gas Sampling
Work Plan (Workplan), received 1 October 2008 from your consultant PSC Environmental Services Inc.
(PSC). The Workplan was submitted in response to my letter of 15 August 2008, which required a
workplan for the soil gas survey and a schedule to implement the work. Sara Lee proposes seven soil
gas probe locations (SG-1 through SG-7), SG-1 in the former tank pit, SG-2 centrally located inside the
existing building, SG-3 outside and south of the former tank pit, SG-4 through SG-6 evenly spaced
outside and along the northern wall of the building, and SG-7 outside and centered along the eastern
wall of the building. The maximum depth of each proposed temporary probe screen interval is
approximately 6 feet, due to the indicated presence of fill material between 4' and 5' below ground
surface. Samples will be collected in Summa canisters and sent to a California-certified laboratory for
analyses of petroleum hydrocarbons, fuel oxygenates, lead scavengers, leak detection compound
isopropyl alcohol (or equivalent), oxygen, carbon dioxide, and methane. A report of the results will be
submitted within 90 days of PSC receipt of the laboratory data.
The Workplan is approved. The work is necessary and appropriate to evaluate potential threats from
vapor intrusion emanating from your petroleum hydrocarbons release to occupants of the existing
building. Please provide a detailed schedule with specific dates for tasks indicated in the Workplan
(permitting, mobilization for field work, turnaround times for receipt of laboratory data, report submittal)
in the monthly status report due 10 November 2008.
If you have any questions, please call me at (916) 464-4615 or email me at
jbarton@waterboards.ca.gov.
ames L.
