kTj KLEI NFELDER
3.0 FIELD ACTIVITIES
On November 7, 1997 a Kleinfelder geologist visited the site to observe the soil excavation near
the former AGST. A diesel-like odor was noted during excavation. The soil stain appeared to
quickly attenuate with depth. At a depth of approximately 2 to 3-feet bsg the stain decreased to
approximately 3-feet by 4-feet. The final excavation was approximately 7-feet by 10-feet by 10-
feet deep. The soil was excavated onto visqueen using a track-mounted excavator supplied by
DSS of Stockton, California. The stockpiled soil was estimated at approximately 25 cubic yards.
Mr. Mike Infurna of PHS/EHD observed the excavation and collection of confirmation samples .
A total of five soil samples were collected from within the excavation, four sidewall samples and
one bottom sample. Kleinfelder also collected one four-point composite sample from the soil
1 stockpiled. The sidewall soil samples were collected at depths ranging from five to six feet
below surface grade (bsg.) The bottom sample was collected at a depth of 10 feet bsg. The
sidewall samples were obtained by slide hammering a clean 2-inch diameter by 6-inch long
I stainless steel tube into the soil The bottom sample was collected by driving a stainless steel
tube into soil by hand from the excavator bucket (from soil which had been collected from the
bottom of the excavation). The four-point composite soil sample was collected by driving
I stainless steel tubes into the stockpile by hand. The stainless steel tubes were removed from the
soil and sealed with Teflon® sheeting and plastic end caps. The samples were labeled, and
placed in an iced cooler pending transportation to the analytical laboratory under chain of
custody protocols. The slide hammer sampler and stainless steel tubes were decontaminated prior
to each use with a detergent/water wash and distilled water rinse.
3.0 LABORATORY ANALYSIS
' Six soil samples were submitted for laboratory analysis. The samples were submitted under
chain-of-custody control to Sequoia Analytical Laboratories (Sequoia) of Sacramento,
I California. Sequoia is certified by the California Department of Toxic Substances (DTSC) to
perform the requested analyses. The samples were analyzed for:
I • Extractable Fuel Fingerprint by EPA Method 8015M
• Total Extractable Petroleum Hydrocarbons by EPA Methods 8015M
• Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylene (BTEX) by EPA Method 8020M
I
The samples were analyzed on a 5-day turnaround time.
i IN
20-2245-32.E01/2017R720 Page 3 of
© 1997, Kleinfelder, Inc.
