GEOMATRIX
Mr. M. Scott Mansholt
Mr. James Levy
June 30, 2005
Page 3
Several borings (GMX-24 and GMX-31 through GMX-33) are planned to assess whether
residual metals may be associated with the former rail road spur that crossed the site. The
two shallow soil samples from each of these borings will be analyzed for Title 22 Metals
(using EPA Method 6020).
Grab groundwater samples will be collected from borings GMX-24 through GMX-29.
Boring GMX-27 will be advanced within the known areas of impacted soil to assess whether
groundwater has been impacted with petroleum hydrocarbons. Borings GMX-24 through
GMX-26, and GMX-28 and GMX-29 will advanced in locations that encircle the area of
known petroleum hydrocarbon affected soil. A groundwater sample will be collected fol-
lowing installation of a temporary well consisting of 1-inch-diameter polyvinyl chloride
(PVC)blank casing and 5 feet of 0.01-inch slot well screen. Each groundwater sample will
be collected using a disposable bailer and will be decanted into the appropriate containers
provided by the laboratory. Grab groundwater samples will be analyzed for TPH quantified
as gasoline (TPHg) and TPHd using EPA Method 8015M,volatile organic compounds
(VOCs) using EPA Method 8260, and PAHs using EPA Method 8270 SIM. TPHd analyses
will be performed both with and without a silica gel preparation procedure. If separate phase
hydrocarbons are observed in the soil core near the water table, a grab groundwater sample
will not be collected.
Soil and groundwater samples will be labeled and stored in an ice-cooled chest until transfer
to a California-certified laboratory under Geomatrix chain-of-custody procedures. All bor-
ings will be grouted to ground surface using a tremie pipe upon completion. Investigation
derived waste will be placed in containers, labeled, and temporarily stored at the site pending
disposal by CEMC and UPRR.
Several samples will be submitted to the laboratory for quality assurance/quality control
(QA/QC) purposes. One travel blank, provided by the laboratory, will accompany grab
groundwater sample containers throughout the trip from the laboratory to the field and back
to the laboratory. The travel blank will be analyzed for TPHg and BTEX. One equipment
blank will be collected using a disposable bailer. The equipment blank will be submitted to
the laboratory, however, it will only be analyzed if there is a question regarding the results of
the grab groundwater samples. One soil sample will be specified for matrix spike/matrix
spike duplicate analysis for TPHd, TPHmo, BTEX, and PAHs.
After analytical results have been received, Geomatrix will prepare a report documenting
field activities, and analytical results. The report will include a description of field and
analytical methods, tables and figures presenting analytical results, and a discussion of the
results.
