Thank you,
Sam V. I have been told not
to drink it, but I still am having to shower and use it for other needs, and as someone
with a compromised immune system this may be critical. I would like to have my water
tested, but as you probably know the tests must be run on samples taken under precisely
acquired conditions: each analyte must be specified and the full suite will require
multiple samples, and finally, I may have to preserve and meet a time deadline to get it
to laboratory. I know this will be very expensive. I have downloaded a list of EPA
certified testing labs and I have a call into the City of Manteca to determine what if any
wells they have operational near to this location. I am very concerned that you have not
tested samples on the Gordon's well water as an initial act of good faith to the
neighboring residents. I dare say, collecting soil samples and waiting until they prove to
show contamination (or not) may take a long time. You have indicated there was a Hg spill,
and I already know from heavy metals testing I had done last smmer, that I show
unexplained elevated levels of mercury in urine tests.
I understand you wanted to relieve some concerns I had as to the impact the location of
the Gordon property has upon my well site. I do feel somewhat better being told the normal
ground water flow is away from me, however, we feel the effects of even small earthquakes
here in Manteca, and water flow is most certainly disrupted. We are talking about a site
that has probably been sitting some 40 years I would guess. Lots of changes and
regulations that might now protect us, would not have been in place during those years,
and the likelihood that chemicals were handled and discarded appropriately during the
entire time is questionable.
Please contact me as soon as you have some additional information. I am genuinely anxious
over the state of my drinking water supply.
Laura DeLoach
----- Original Message ----
From: Laura DeLoach <deloachld@yahoo.com>
To: NSchumac@dtsc.ca.gov; SMartin2@dtsc.ca.gov
Sent: Friday, September 12, 2008 2:44:53 PM
Subject: request - Gordon Research Property, Manteca, CA
My name is Laura DeLoach and I live at 1298 Corwin Dr., the east/west street just south of
the property off Union Rd. As a concerned neighbor to this property on which chemical
storage and waste cleanup is ongoing, I am writing with an immediate request. In the last
week or so (perhaps longer) , I have noticed a change in my water pressure. I went to
change 2 prefilters to my water conditioner - a sediment filter and a carbon filter. I was
shocked to find that these filters were disintegrating; they had been recently replaced
(probably within last 3 months) . I have never seen one do this (even after much longer
periods of use - some filters have been in place for over a year) and we installed the
water conditioner for our personal well 9 years ago, so I have replaced many of these! As
an aside, I had to have a new well drillled about 3 years ago.
Today, I called a servive technician out for the water conditioner. He said he has never
seen filters so disintegrated, to the point the plastic had dissolved from the outer
surface of the carbon filter. His first question to me, "was there any activity locally
that could have affected my groundwater in recent months?" I explained what we have been
told of the Gordon Research site and the location and he felt it's proximity should have
me very concerned. He said my water should be independently tested immediately. Now, I
would like to know what environmental lab you are using for testing and what chemicals I
2
