The Report summarized
groundwater sampling activities, performed on 11 September 2002, pursuant to the requirements of
Monitoring and Reporting Program (MRP)No. 95-818.
Depth-to-groundwater measurements were provided for 17 on-site groundwater monitoring wells. MW-
15 is currently inaccessible. Groundwater samples collected from nine wells (MW-1, MW-2, MW-4,
MW-5, MW-7, MW-9, MW-12, MW-13, and MW-14)were submitted for laboratory analysis for
volatile organic compounds (VOCs)by USEPA Method 8021B.
Groundwater level measurements indicated that groundwater flow in the shallow zone is toward the
southeast. Cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cis-1,2-DCE), tetrachloroethene (PCE), and trichloroethene(TCE)
were detected in concentrations ranging from 1.7 micrograms per liter(gg/L) to 18 µg/1,. The highest
concentrations of cis-1,2-DCE, PCE, and TCE (constituents of concern or COC) were detected in MW-
5, located approximately 500 feet north of the reported source area. COC concentrations were consistent
with previous observations.
The Report contains a recommendation for groundwater extraction, from monitoring well MW-5, and
treatment using granular activated carbon (GAC) for the remediation of volatile organic compounds in
groundwater. Treated effluent will be discharged into the spray field located northeast of the inmate
facility fence as permitted by Waste Discharge Requirements Order(WDR)No. R5-2002-0146. The
WDR was adopted in anticipation of the performance of Fire Pit soil remediation.
The Report also contains a no further action request for remediation of soils in the Fire Pit Area. An
assessment of the potential for the Fire Pit soil volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to further degrade
groundwater was prepared in the August 2002 Soil Assessment Report, Soil And Groundwater
California Environmental Protection Agency
Zoo Recycled Paper
The energy challenge facing California is real.
