Box 388
Stockton, CA 95201-0388
RE: Review of potential remediation alternatives , Tracy Cold Storage, Tracy, California.
Site Code 505329 --
Dear Ms. Lagorio; -
American Geological Services, Inc. has reviewed the currently available-site data in order
to evaluate possible: remediation alternatives--for -the- above- referenced site. This
preliminary„review was:conducted in response to your letter dated November 8, 1995.
Numerous remediation alternatives*were reviewed; mcludmg soil yap and.
-. _..
soil excavation with subsequent ground water treatment
Soil descriptions cbntained on boring logs prepared by Remcor during soil boring and
monitoring well installations indicate firm clay-soil across the site to a maximum--drilled
depth of 18 feet below grade.- The'static ground water level is approximately 12feet
below grade and the screened interval_of each monitoring well extends from 8 feet to 18
feet below grade.
Because of the. firm clay character of'the site soils, it is believed that high vacuum
=_pressures would be required to produce an-effective radius of-influence around extraction
wells in a vapor extraction system. The :.need for high vacuum pressure would
significantly.increase th_ e cost of the vapor extraction system installation, operation, and,
perhaps, maintenance. Furthermore,•because of the shallow ground water depth and the
fact that there is no-cap of asphalt or other- impermeable-material over the contaminated
soils, there is a high potential for short circuiting of the vapor stream.
p' : he installation of vapor extraction test wells on'th s site
It is the opinion of AGS that t
would not be prudent as this technology is likely to be inefficient in removing target ,
constituents,. from.the soils present... Given the present state of-knowledge of the site a
remediation system that incorporates soil excavation followed by a ground°water pump
- and treat system would be the most cost-effective alternative. i
Telephone (209)532-8021 P.O.
