' Mr. Tim Becker
2 March 29, 1989
r
o Soil discoloration was observed at the bottom of the tank (recorded at
six feet, six inches below grade) . Excavated to a depth of nine and
one half feet in an attempt to .define the extent of discoloration.
o Obtained one soil sample (SS-5A) from the native soil at nine and one
half feet below the tank. The sample was taken at this depth at the
request of the on-site inspector from the San Joaquin Local Health
District. The soil sample was laboratory analyzed for benzene,
toluene, and xylene (BTX) , total volatile petroleum hydrocarbons
(TVPH) , and ethylene dibromide (EDB) . The sample location is shown on
Figure 2.
o Backfilled the tank pit and compacted the backfill to minimize
' settling.
The location and limits of excavation of the- 1,000-gallon gasoline tank at j
' Lindsay Street are shown on Figure 3. Tank removal activities consisted of
the following:
o Removed one 1,000-gallon gasoline tank (Tank 6, Figure 3) . No holes,
signs of leakage, or overfilling were noted upon removal .
o Soil discoloration was observed at the bottom of the tank (recorded at "
six feet below grade) . In an attempt to define the extent of
contamination, we excavated further to a depth of 13 feet.
' o Obtained one soil sample (SS-6A) from the native soil at 13 feet below
the tank. The sample was taken at this depth at the request of the on-
site inspector. The soil sample -was laboratory analyzed for BTX, TVPH,
and EDB. The sample location is- shown on Figure 3.
' o Backfilled the tank pit and compacted the backfill to minimize
settling.
' Site Condition
' From field observations and laboratory analyses, the following statements
can be made' about the soil conditions at 'the Stockton site:
Heinz Street location:
o Laboratory analysis resulted in: nondetectable levels of TVPH, EDB; and
BTX in the soil samples three feet below the gasoline tank (Tank 5A) .
' Lindsay Street location:
' o The laboratory analyses of soil sample SS-6A showed 8.8 ppm TVPH; the
levels of EDB, and BTX were all -nondetectable.
C:an on to E nv i r on mental .
.l
