KLEINFELDER
. 3 FIELD ACTIVITIES
3.1 DRILLING
`-' A total of three soil borings will be drilled on the property. Proposed locations of the
borings are shown on Plate 2. Boring locations are based on the assumed direction of
ground water flow, and the proximity of facilities discussed in the above. Soil borings will
be advanced with a truck-mounted drill rig equipped with 6-inch hollow-stem augers.
Depth to water is estimated to be 10 to 15 feet below ground surface. Borings will not be
drilled past the soil ground water interface. During drilling and sampling activities, an
experienced environmental geologist will classify the soil, collect samples, and log the
` boreholes.
Soil samples will be collected by advancing the boring to a point immediately_ above the
sampling depth and then driving a Modified California Sampler lined with three brass
,., tubes into the undisturbed soil. The sampler will then be removed from the bottom of the
boring, and a select tube will be sealed with Teflon sheeting, and tight fitting plastic end
caps. The sealed tube will be labeled, logged onto a chain-of-custody, and stored in an iced
cooler. The samples will be retained in refrigerated storage for future reference or
analysis.
4
To reduce the potential for cross-contamination between borings, augers and associated
equipment will be steam cleaned prior to the drilling of each borehole. The sampling
equipment will be cleaned with a trisodium phosphate wash and a distilled water rinse
.. prior to the collection of each sample. Drill cuttings will be placed in Department of
Transportation approved 55-gallon drums, labeled and left onsite for future disposition.
Upon completion of the drilling activities, each boring will be backfilled with a
cement/bentonite grout.
3.2 GROUND WATER SAMPLING
Ground water samples will be extracted from the bottom of the borings using a BAT
Probe. The BAT Probe consists of a sample extraction tip made of stainless steel. The tip
- is lowered into the boring at the end of a 1-inch inside diameter galvanized steel pipe, and
„ F6-90-164 3
