kn KLEINFELDER
pushed into the soil/aquifer at the bottom of the borings. Additional lengths of pipe can be
,. screwed onto the probe to extend it-as needed. A weighted glass, vacuum sealed sampling
ampoule is placed through the pipe down to the tip. Between the tip and the sample vessel
LM is a double sided syringe which punctures the seal on the tip and the sample vessel. In this
way, ground water is drawn through the tip into the glass vessel. The sample vessel is
pulled out of the pipe and the syringe removed. Removal of the syringe does not break the
seal on the glass ampoule. The sterilized glass sample vessels are purchased from the BAT
company.
The first sample extracted from the probe is considered a purge sample and is not
. submitted for chemical analysis. The sampling process can be repeated as necessary to
obtain sufficient sample volume without diminished accuracy.
Ground water samples will be labeled, logged onto a chain-of-custody, and stored in an
iced cooler. At the end of drilling operations, ground water samples will be delivered
under chain-of-custody documentation at Enseco Inc. in West Sacramento, an EPA-State
certified analytical laboratory.
After purging and samV ,t e galvanized pipe and tip are extracted from the boring and
the boring is grouted with a cement/bentonite slurry. The tips, galvanized pipe or other
equipment that may have been used in the boring are steam cleaned or washed with
trisodium phosphate and a distilled water rinse prior to insertion into the next boring.
3.3 QUALITATIVE FIELD SCREENING
An organic vapor analyzer will be used to screen the soil samples collected from the
- borings. Field screening of soil samples should provide a qualitative indication of the
presence of petroleum hydrocarbons. An organic vapor analyzer measures hydrocarbons in
air in parts per million by volume (ppmv). Based on field screening results soil samples
may be recommended for chemical analysis.
3.4 HEALTH AND SAFETY
" Kleinfelder personnel and their field subcontractors have completed the 40-hour course
and annual 8-hour update required by 29 CFR 1910.120. Kleinfelder's courses are taught
L
. F6-90-164 4
