standards in about 10 pet-Cent of wells- nationwa.de . In 1992 , EPA
provided a list of large water systems with lead levels exceeding
0. 015 mg/1 ( Table 3) .
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The presence of lead in the groundwater is a health concern , -Lf the
' groundwater is a drinking water souce . The health effects depend
upon the nutrition , health status , and actual exposure conditions
of the target population . Younq children ( 0-6 years ) , pregnant'.
women , and person: with renal or' hepatic disorders are more
susceptible to the adverse health effects of lead . The research to
date indicates that the threshold for adverse health effects is not
quantifiable , that, the lowest achievable levels of lead exposures
should be the objective .
Since the concentrations of lead in the groundwater appear to be
generally declining , remediation of soils seems inappropriate .
However , the lead concentrations in the surrounding drinking water
supply wells should be monitored quarterly. If drinking water
samples consistently exceed the 0 .015 mg/1 MCL standard ,
alternative water supplies should be considered .
REFERENCES
ATSDR , 1991 , Toxicological Profile for Lead.
