Mr.Harlin Knoll January 31,2003
Work Plan for Vertical Assessment
USA Service Station No. 65
Page 4
HydropunchTM sampling equipment will be used to collect the groundwater samples, at
desired depth intervals, based on the continuous log generated from the CPT. The
HydropunchTM sampler will be pushed to the bottom of the sampling interval using
2-inch diameter steel rods. The steel rods are subsequently retracted approximately four
feet, exposing the screen, to allow for the collection of depth discreet groundwater
samples.
Soil samples may be collected for permeability testing or other selected soil parameters.
If soil samples are collected, hollow rods (approximately 1.7 inches in diameter), with a
modified tip (similar to a California split-spoon sampler), will be pushed into the
subsurface to collect the soil samples. Upon completion of sampling, the direct-push
boring will be grouted from the bottom of the borehole up to surface grade.
Task 3: Laboratory Analysis
Soil and groundwater samples will be forwarded to a California state-certified laboratory
for chemical analysis under strict chain-of-custody procedures. The samples will be
analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHG) using USEPA Method
8015 DHS/LUFT, and for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total xylenes (BTEX);
methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), ethyl tertiary butyl ether (ETBE), di-isopropyl ether
(DIPE), tertiary amyl methyl ether (TAME), tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA), and 1,2-
dichloroethane (1,2-DCA), using USEPA Method 8260.
Task 4: Reporting
The results of the investigation will be presented in a soil and groundwater assessment
report. The report will include, but not be limited to, analytical tables, a scaled site plan,
a CPT Test Data Report, site geology, geologic cross sections, sampling logs, certified
analytical reports, findings, and conclusions of the assessment.
SCHEDULE
Following approval of this work plan, Stratus will submit an access agreement to the
property owner south of the USA facility. Once the agreement has been obtained, a
permit application package will be forwarded to San Joaquin County PHS/EHD and the
proposed work will be scheduled. It will likely require three weeks for a C-57 licensed
contractor to become available. The work should be completed within one week.
Laboratory results will take an additional two weeks to receive. A report documenting
the findings of the investigation will be submitted approximately four weeks after
receiving all analytical results.
PAUSA Gasoline\0065\Workplans\usa65-ept-workplan.doc OMAW5
