This valley is <br /> a broad northwest-treading structural trough bounded on the east by the Sierra Nevada and <br /> on the west by the northern coast ranges(California Division of Mines and Geology, 1966). <br /> The site is underlain by the Pleistocene Ivtodesto Formation. Deposits of the Modesto <br /> Formation were laid (town as a series of coalescing alluvial fans and consist in large part <br /> of gravel, sand, and sift. According to Marchand and Al[wardt (1977), numerous channels <br /> are present within the Modesto Formation that create rapid lateral changes in texture. <br /> t <br /> 6 <br /> -� The site is in the Western San Joaquin County Ground-Water Basin(California Department. <br /> of Water Resources, 1980).
