Upon removal of the USTs, soil
samples were collected from the floor of the excavation by representatives of Alpha Analytical
Laboratories,Inc. (AAL)of Ukiah, California. On 13 N vember 1998, soil samples were collected
beneath the former fuel dispenser island area by a representative of Precision Enviro-tech Analytical
Laboratory (PEAL).
2.1. UNDERGROUND STORAGE TANK REMO AL ACTIVITIES
On 28 September 1998, a 710 John Deer backhoe/loader was utilized to expose the USTs at the site
(see Figure 2). Soil removed during excavation activities was stockpiled in a southeast section at the
site and covered with plastic sheeting.
Each UST measured 33 feet in length and 8 feet in di eter. The excavation cavity was measured
at approximately 25 feet in width by 40 feet in length. Each UST was buried beneath approximately
4 feet of backfill;the bottom of each UST was measured at 12 feet below surface grade (bsg). Prior
to excavation activities, an estimated 750 gallons of diesel fuel remained in both USTs.
On 28 August 1998, each UST was triple rinsed u ilizing a pressure washer as part of tank
decontamination procedures. During decontaminatio activities, approximately 850 gallons of
rinsate/diesel fuel were pumped out of the USTs and i to a mobile vacuum truck supplied by Nor
Cal Oil, Inc. and hauled offsite to Industrial Service iI Co., an EPA-approved hazardous waste
facility.
