Louise-
Ave., Lathrop, CA Site# 2491
On February 2 & 5, 1996 VaE., Inc. in conjunction with the C-57 licensed contr4cfor
Frontier Drilling,,destroyed an abandoned water well at the above referenced site. This
well was within a groundwater contamination plume associated with leaking UST's,' and
was directed to be closed by'-San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental
Health Division (SJC PHS/EHD): , All field activities were-witnessed by personnel° from
SJC PHS/EHD.
Record searches did not find any information on the well. Frontier overdrilled the 5'/2-inch
o.d. well casing with 10-inch hollow stem augers..-The first five (5) feet below ground
level was concrete. The augers were, advanced to 40'feet below grade and 16 feet of steel
casing was retrieved. It was discovered that.there was a broken-weld on the welded flush-
joint casing at — 20 feet below grade. It was determined that.the original installation was
driven casing by the cable tool drilling method.
The augers were advanced to 50 feet below grade. A 1'/2-inch threaded PVC tremmie
pipe was installed-.inside the well casing to 60 feet below grade and-j2 bags (120 gallons)
of-6% bentonite/cemenf.grout mixture was placed'from 20 to 60 feet. The augers were
removed from the boring and the annulus was grouted, as-above, up to one foot below
ground level, to allow for site development. Twelve bags were also used during this
portion.
Determination of the.subsurface litholoc, from-the auger cuttings was not possibleas the.gy
_
soils were "homogenized" by the auger flights.during the drilling activity, and the cuttings
were from previously disturbed soil during the well installation. Tile- driller reported
- slower, tighter drilling.from 30 tb-34 feet below grade and°a much tighter interval.from 45
to 50 feet below grade. The bottom augers-were covered with a dark: gray, tight, waxy
clay that peeled off in large chunks.
