(Aegis). On behalf of Shell, Aegis wishes to submit the following
comments in regard to the installation of an additional monitoring well at the subject site.
Soils and alluvial materials beneath the site as logged in monitoring well and soil borings
drilled by Delta Environmental Inc. (Delta), consist of interlayered clay and silt with lenses
of silty sand. A soil sample (T-3) was collected in January 1989, at an approximate depth
of 3 feet below ground surface. Analysis of the sample indicated a concentration of
approximately 1,510 parts-per-million total petroleum hydrocarbons, as gasoline. The
depth to groundwater at the site has been consistently measured not shallower than 57
feet below grade. Thus, the deepest documented occurrence of petroleum hydrocarbons
in soil is more than 50 feet above groundwater surface.
Additionally, groundwater beneath the site has been monitored since August 15, 1989.
Analysis of groundwater samples collected during the last five quarters has indicated none
of the samples contained petroleum hydrocarbons above laboratory detection limits.
For the above reasons, the installation of an additional groundwater monitoring well does
not appear to be warranted at this time. An additional groundwater investigation was not
agreed to by Shell during a meeting with SJCPHS staff on November 22, 1991.
91-231A.LTR
GEOLOGISTS • ENGINEERS • GROUNDWATER SCIENTISTS
