C Equipment used for sampling which is in direct contact with the soil media, will undergo a more stringent decontamination process: The procedures are as follows: LBrush off loose dirt-with a steel-bristle'brush in the decontamination area; • Equipment is washed in Tri-Sodium Phosphate (TSP)'detergent solution using plastic scrub brushes; • Following the detergent wash,.equipment is rinsed with tap water; and • As a final step, equipment is rinsed with distilled water and allowed'to air dry. • The clean equipment is then transfred to the clean zone. • Decontamination solutions are transferred to 55-gallon drums for storage prior to disposal. BOREHOLE ABANDONMENT . All borings will be abandoned by backfilling with bentonite chips or a concrete-bentonite slurry. The backfill materials are poured down the.hollow-stem auger and the augers removed in five foot increments. The down-hole hammer is used to insure that there is no bridging of the backfill materials. For bentonite chips, a small amount of tap (potable) water is.added down the augers as each five foot .flight is removed'.to hydrate the bentonite and form a seal against contaminant migration. This process will continue until the borehole is filled to within one foot of the ground surface, then capped with concrete to.the ground surface. PROJECT DOCUMENTATION Lt Documentation of each step in the drilling and sample e collection procedure is essential to track and evaluate the validity and quality of the data that is generated. The following forms are used to document the investigation program: • Soil boring log; • Sample chain of custody form; • Daily field work log, and; • Drum inventory form. C' These forms contain much of the same information and are filled out by different members of the sampling crew, therefore; allowing.a cross check of the sampling location numbers,.sampling depths, sample numbers and analyses requested per sample. i..l C-4
