1
Co-extraction Well Installation Report November 4, 1997
. APPENDIX A
' Soil Sampling and Sample Handling Procedures
' Hollow-stem augers with an outside diameter of 12 0 inches was used to drill the borings
Individual auger flights are five feet in length One soil sample was collected from each
boring The driller's rod with cutting tip prevents soil from entering into the auger flights
during the boring process When a target depth is reached, the rod and tip are removed and a
modified California Split Spoon Sampler is placed at the end of the rod and lowered to the
bottom of the boring The sampler is then driven into the soil by repeatedly raising and
dropping a 140 pound hammer from a height of 30 inches until the sampler has been
advanced 18 inches The number of blows for each 6 inch interval is recorded for evaluation
' of penetration resistance
The driving action forces the sampler into relatively undisturbed soil Details of the
components of the Modified California Split Spoon Sampler are described below Following
the driving operation, the hammer and sampler are retrieved from the boring and separated
' The soil sampler is disassembled and the soil sample removed and prepared for shipment to
an analytical laboratory
' The modified California Split Spoon Sampler consists of an outer sampler barrel and an
inner, thin walled set of tubes As the sampler is forced into the soil by the driving action, a
soil sample is collected in the inner tubes For this application, 6-inch-long by 2-inch-
diameter brass tubes were used After retrieval from the boring and subsequent detachment,
the sampler is dismantled and the inner tubes containing the soil samples are removed and a
tube, typically the center tube, is selected for laboratory analyses The selected tube is sealed
' by covering the ends with a sheet of aluminum foil and plastic end caps Each sample is
then labeled and placed in a refrigerated chest for shipment to a state-certified analytical
laboratory
' To avoid cross-contamination between samples and boreholes, the modified California Split
P P
Spoors Sampler and the inner tube inserts are cleaned before each use The sampling
equipment is washed with an aqueous cleaning solution, rinsed with fresh water and allowed
to air dry Drill augers are steam cleaned or pressure washed between borings to reduce
' potential cross-contamination
Each soil sample collected is screened in the field for possible total volatiles by use of an
' organic vapor meter A portion of the sample is placed in a scalable air-tight plastic bag
After the bag has been sealed for a minimum of five minutes, the sampling probe of the
analyzer or meter is inserted into the bag and the presence of volatiles in the air space is
' measured and the meter readings recorded on the boring log The field meters are battery-
powered instruments that can detect and indicate concentrations of total volatiles (gas or
' OST
coexwell rpt
1
