PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICES
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DIVISION `
Karen Furst, M.D., M.P.H., Health Officer
304 East Weber Avenue, Third Floor • Stockton, CA 95202
209/468-3420
JOE ALDRIDGE
BILE COPY
ULTRAMAR INC
PO BOX 466 JUL 3 1998
525 W THIRD ST
HANFORD CA 93232
RE: Beacon #474 SITE CODE: 1173
3440 E. Main Street
Stockton, CA., 95205
San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division
(PHS-EHD) has reviewed the June 16, 1998 "First Quarter 1998 Ground Water
Monitoring Report" and "Work Plan For A Remedial Investigation" submitted by
Horizon Environmental on June 29, 1998 and has the following comments.
As this site prepares to enter into a remedial investigation, it is important that
groundwater quarterly monitoring reports are submitted on time (prior to the next
monitoring event). In addition, quarterly monitoring reports should be submitted
with adequate time to allow PHS-EHD to review the data so that any
modifications required may be incorporated in the next sampling event. Please
adjust your scheduling for the quarterly events at this site so that this
requirement can be met and please continue to contact Michael Infurna to
schedule the sampling inspections forty-eight hours prior to the proposed work
performance.
At this time, only groundwater samples from monitoring wells #2 and #6 (MW-2 &
6) are showing BTEX as well as Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as Gasoline
(TPH-G) in the groundwater. Currently water is above the screened interval of
MW-2 and the Benzene concentration in the groundwater sample from MW-6 is
twenty times higher than the Benzene concentration in MW-2. Only low levels of
TPH-G were detected in the groundwater from the other monitoring wells (Mws
1, 3, & 8). This condition leaves only MW-6 to provide groundwater samples
from current vadose/saturated zone interface that contain Benzene. t
Vapor wells #1 and #4 (deepest of three casings in each vapor well) have
groundwater in them at this time and are located closer to the groundwater
plume than the other monitoring wells on site. PHS-EHD will require all vapor i
i
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
