4.2 Sampling
Field groundwater monitoring data (conductivity, pH, temperature, and
' turbidity) and groundwater elevation data were used to determine the volume of
purge water to be removed from each monitoring well prior to sampling Samples
' were collected after physical parameters stabilized and a minimum of three well
volumes of water had been removed Purge water and other investigation-derived
wastes (IDW) were placed in Department of Transportation (DOT) approved 17E/H
drums
IDW will be sampled and submitted to the District's laboratory for waste
characterization as specified in the July 1993 Additional Assessment and Groundwater
Monitoring Work Plan (Work Plan) Upon receipt of the waste profile
' characterization results, the IDW will be appropriately disposed
Three groundwater samples were collected from monitoring wells MW-1,
MW-8, and MW-9 using 1-inch Teflon bailers as specified in the September 1993
' Addendum to the Work Plan All samples were collected in three 40-milliliter (ml)
volatile organic analyte (VOA) vials preserved with a hydrochloric acid solution and
' submitted for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total xylenes (BTEX) and TPH-g
analyses Additional groundwater was collected from MW-8 in a 500-m1 glass far for
the purpose of conducting a bacterial platelet count Groundwater samples were not
collected for total lead analysis, per agreement between BVWST, the District, and
Ms Diane Hinson (SJCPHS)
' The three samples from MW-1, MW-8, and MW-9, along with the appropriate
Chain-of-Custody forms, were submitted to the District's state certified laboratory
The samples were analyzed for BTEX by U S Environmental Protection Agency
(USEPA) Method 8020, and for TPH-g by USEPA Modified Method 8015
' The groundwater sample from MW-8 was submitted to Anlab Analytical
Laboratory (Anlab), a state certified independent laboratory, for a bacterial platelet
count This test determines the total number of colony-forming bacterial units per
gram of sample The test was conducted in accordance with SM 9215B There is no
standard EPA method for this test
Quality control samples were collected in the field to provide a control on the
sampling, analysis, and shipping procedures A spilt sample was collected from
' MW-9, submitted to Anlab, and analyzed for BTEX and TPH-g to provide a control
on the analytical procedures The quality control samples were collected and handled
in the same manner as the other samples One trip blank, prepared by the District
' laboratory, consisting of one 40-m1 VOA vial, was shipped with the collected samples
i
941ZB East Bay Municipal Utility District
40429600 lstgtr gw 9 Slockton Service Center First Quarter 1994
