5. }
KLEINFELDER
1 B-3 QUALI'T'ATIVE FIEW SCREENING
"
A Foxboro organic vapor analyzer, using a flame ionization detector (FID), was used to
_ provide a qualitative screening of each soil sample collected during the borings, The FID
measures ionizable compounds in the air in parts per million by volume (ppmv). Field
calibration is performed using a calibrated span gas. Ambient air is used to set the
instrument. The screening procedure consisted of sealing a soil sample in a clean Mason
jar, allowing the sample to equilibrate for 5 to 15 minutes, and scanning the headspace of
the jar for volatiles. The vapor reading was noted as the field scrocning result.
i
For the protection of the drilling crew, the PIT? or FID was also used to measure the
volatile concentrations in the breathing zone prior to and during the drilling of the samples.
Total ionizable hydrocarbon readings in excess of 5 ppmv would have necessitated
respiratory protection for the affected crew members. This requirement is included in the
i
" complete field health and safety plan-that is developed for the project prior to the start of
field work.
J
B-4 SOIL BORING CLOSURE
f ` Soil borings were closed after the collection and logging of soil samples.
a '
CIosure was accomplished by grouting the boring with a cement/sand slurry,
B-5 SOIL;SAMPLE SELECTION FOR LABORATORY ANALYSIS I
Li The selection of soil samples for laboratory analysis was based upon: 1
} qualitative field
screening performed in the field using FID; 2) field observations such as odor,
3 + discoloration or high moisture content; and 3)project requirements. Generally, samples
were submitted from the bottom of the boring and from soil horizons with significant
— potential for contamination as-indicated 1 -the FID,visual observations and site history.
