4 l
i Memorandum
" lid
it
5.. Other potential existing sources of FHC's and particularly MTBE may include but are not limited to kMk
surface spills which may enter joints and fractures in surface finishes (concrete & asphalt) and f
leaking surface water oil/grease separators, drains and conveyances.
6. Ground water samples from monitoring wells were observed to have moderate to strong
ether/oxygenate odors most notable in MW#2. No standard/typical FHC odor, floating product or
sheen were observed, however, extremely small translucent droplets of an unidentified substance
(MTBE?) were observed on the surface of bailer samples placed in observation dishes from MW
#2. It is possible that our approach to visual and olfactory observations during sampling events j
may need to be modified as a result of fuel reformulation/oxygenates like MTBE, TAME,EIDE and
alcohol blends. In accordance it is also possible that soil sampling and groundwater sampling
approaches may need to be modified to better assess contaminant distribution, migration and risk
assessment
P
7. Additional monitoring wells° will be required to further delineate the vertical and lateral plume
boundaries. Unocal has been contacted and have been directed to immediately submit a workplan rE
with boring permits to PHS/EHD to address the undefined plume (written format to follow this
memo). As the analytical results from the third quarter monitoring event are received and reviewed
further work on MTBE correlations at this site and others will continue to receive appropriate priority
until directed otherwise. a f
RWR
Attachments '
CIf
I
i• 'i
Ili
!
ii
A d'!
2
