Elena K. Manzo [EH]
From: Elena K. Manzo [EH]
Sent: Wednesday, August 07, 2013 8:29 AM
To: 'Joanne Smith-Ripp'
Subject: RE: Using carpet under cars for oil leaks
Hi Joanne,
As long as the used carpet is switched out when saturated and managed according to
hazardous waste regulations, it is acceptable. As for the fire issue, there may be
something in the Fire Code that prohibits it, but you'd have to check with City or County
Fire. However, they need to be aware that if the saturated carpet is left unattended and
the substance leaches into the ground through cracks, etc, than it may result in an
unauthorized release to the environment. I hope that helps.
Elena K. Manzo
San Joaquin County
Environmental Health Department
1868 E. Is there a concern from an environmental health
standpoint on this?
"I would like to know if it is ok for auto dismantles to use carpet under there cars
in a customer area to absorb oil?
Isn't this a fire hazard and a big environment issue?"
Thanks Elena!
Joanne Smith-Ripp
Management Analyst • Solid Waste Division San Joaquin County Public Works Department 1810
E.
