Located on
the site is an underground concrete vault that was formerly used to
store heating oil. The vault was installed in the late 1930's or
`, early 1940's, but has not been used since the early 197015. It
measures 25' x 10' x 8' and is located beneath the men's restroom
building (Figure 2) . The company is seeking permission from the
Environmental Health Division (L`tD) of San Joaquin County to
abandon the vault in place. Removing it would require demolition of
the restroom and valua5le refrigeration equipment that is located
on the 'roof of the restroom.
In order to determine whether heating oil may have leaked fro,n the
vault in the past, soil samples from beneat=h the vault were
collected by McCain I,nvironmental under the direction of EHD in
August 1991 . The samples were obtained from shallot!: hand-auger
borings and analyzed in accord, rce . ith FPA methods E1015m and 8020.
'Total petroleum hydrocarbons as rro;_or oil were detected at levels
up to 9000 mg/kg at a depth of 4 ft, and purgeable aromatic,
hydrocarbons (ESTE&X) were detected at levels up to 3,200 Jig/kg (see
Tank Closure Neport of WHF Environmental, 13 August 1991) . The
results indicar-ed that at, unauthorized release of heating oil had
occurred, and assessment of the extent of soil contamination was
ti:creforc requi.Yed by San Joaquin EHD.
Geological Audit Services (GeoAudit) was subsequently retained by
Escalon Packers, inc. , and in January 1992, seven soil samples were
collected by GeoAudit from two borings underneath the vault. A Site
Assessment Preliminary Repor' was submitted to San Joaquin EHD by
GeoAudit on 18 February 1992. Soil contamination in the diesel and
motor oil range was detected at levels up to 22,000 mgfkg at a
depth of approximately 15 ft. On 13 March 1992, a letter from San
Joaquin EHD to Escalon Packers .equested additional investigation
to delineate the vertical and , ateral extent of contamination.
Six additional soil borings were drilled in May 1992 around the
perimeter of the underground vault under the direction of GeoAudit.
2'he results of this investigation are presented in this ieport.
2.0 DEPTH TO GROUNDWATER
As reported in our February 1992 Site Assessment Preliminary
Report, the depth to groundwater is presently more than 60 ft below
grade.
