April 14, 1993 Project No. EK-6032-2

Mitigation: Cool place for breaks:
Whenever ambient temperatures exceed 80°F,or whenever semi-permeable or
impermeable protective clothing is worn and ambient temperatures exceed 700,
monitoring the worker:
• Heart rate. Count the radial pulse during a 30-second period as early as
possible in the rest period.
If the heart rate exceeds 110 beats per minute at the beginning of the rest
period, shorten the next work cycle by 113 and keep the rest period the
same. If the heart rate still exceeds 110 beats per minute at the next rest
period, shorten the following work cycle by 1/3 (12).
• Oral temperature. Use a clinical thermometer (3 minutes under the
tongue)or similar device to measure the oral temperature at the end of the
work period (before drinking).
If oral temperature exceeds 99.6°F (37.6°C), shorten the next work cycle
by 113 (12). Do NOT permit a worker to wear a semi-permeable or
; impermeable garment when his/her oral temperature exceeds 100.6°F
(38.1-C) (12).
Take frequent breaks in shaded area. Unzip or remove PPE during breaks.
Provide drinking water and/or electrolyte replacement drink. Record the time
and duration of all breaks. Heat stroke victims just receive emergency
medical care.
Hypothermia/Frostbite
Symptoms: Hypothermia: Shivering, apathy, loss of consciousness, decreasing
pulse and breathing rate.
Frostbite: white, then grayish yellow progressing to grayish blue
skin. Cold, numb part.
Mitigation: Wear multi-layer cold weather outfits covered by a wind resistant fabric.
Take frequent breaks in a warm, sheltered area. Provide warm non-alcoholic
drinks. For frostbite victims warm injured part gradually,do not rub! Warm
hypothermia victims and transport to emergency medical care.
Undergroundloverhead Utilities -- show location of utilities on site map
How were underground utilities identified? contact USA, sneak with property owner T
Describe mitigation measures: Boring locations found to be within 2 feet of underground
utilities will be relocated. --
4
