18 August 1997 <br /> AGE-NC Project No. 95-0185 <br />' Page 2 of 5 <br />' The samples were composted and the sample was analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons <br /> quantified as gasoline and diesel (TPH-g and TPH-d), for volatile aromatic compounds (benzene, <br /> toluene, ethylbenzene and total xylene: BTE&X) and methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) in <br /> accordance with EPA methods 5030/8015m and 602, respectively. <br /> 2.3. MONITORING WELL PURGE PROCEDURES <br /> On 27 March 1997 and 06 June 1997, the water level in each monitoring well was measured relative <br /> to the top of the well casings using a Solinst water level meter. The depths to ground water and <br /> relative ground water elevations are given in Table 3 - Relative Ground Water Elevation. <br />' After depth to water measurements, a two-stage submersible pump was used to purge each well. <br /> Eight to ten gallons of water were removed from MW-1, MW-2 and MW-3 and fifteen to twenty <br /> 1 gallons of water were removed from MW-4 (minimum of three well volumes). The ground water <br /> parameters of temperature, pH and conductivity were measured at regular intervals, using an ICM <br /> water analyzer. Purged water was stored on-site in 55-gallon DOT-approved drums. <br /> 2.4. COLLECTION OF GROUND WATER SAMPLES <br />' A water sample was collected from each.well, using a new disposable plastic bailer, and was <br /> transferred into two 40'ml VOA vials containing 0.511'l1 of 18% hydrochloric acid as a sample <br /> preservative and into one 1-liter amber bottle without preservative. After collection, the samples <br /> were placed in a chilled container and transported under chain-of-custody to MAI. Each sample was <br /> analyzed for TPH-g, TPH-d, and for BTE&X and MTBE in accordance with EPA methods <br /> 1 5030/8015m and 602, respectively. <br />' 3.0. FINDINGS <br /> 3.1. GROUND WATER GRADIENT AND FLOW DIRECTION <br /> 1 <br /> The relative elevation of ground water in each well was calculated by subtracting the ground water <br /> depth from the surveyed casing elevation. Monitoring well casing elevations were surveyed relative _ <br /> to MW-4, which was assigned an arbitrary elevation of 60 feet above sea level. <br />' During the March 1997 sampling event, the depth to ground water below the top of the well casing <br /> at the site ranged from 17.64 to 18.34 feet.
