' 21 March 2001
' AGE-NC Project No. 98-0432
sleeves were labeled and placed in a chilled container.
Following collection of soil samples from each boring, a water sampling assembly equipped with
' a slotted PVC screen was advanced to the bottom of the soil boring and a grab water sample
collected utilizing a modified Teflon tube bailer constructed with a new Teflon tubing section and
a base check valve. Each grab water sample was transferred into three 40-ml EPA-approved volatile
' • organic analysis (VOA)vials containing 0.5 ml 18% hydrochloric acid as a sample preservative and
into a 1-liter amber container without a preservative.
All probing rods;sampling tools and sample liners used for sample collection were thoroughly rinsed
with clean water after washing with a solution of Alconox prior to each sampling run. Following the
sampling of the soil borings, neat portland cement slurry was placed into each soil boring using a
' . tremmie pipe. The soil borings were then filled to the surface with the slurry to ensure grout
penetration.
2.2. LOGGING
Soil was extruded from a duplicate soil sleeve and screened for the presence of organic vapor using
an. organic vapor meter (OVM) equipped with a photo-ionization detector (PID: Thermo
Environmental 580A, 10.0 eV, calibrated to isobutylene); the readings were recorded on the boring
' log. The soil was then visually described in accordance with.the Unified Soil Classification System
(see Appendix A).
2.3. LABORATORY ANALYSES OF SAMPLES
' Selected soil samples and grab, water samples were transported under chain-of-custody, to
McCampbell Analytical Laboratory(MAI)in Pacheco,California,a California Department of Health
' Services (CA DHS)-certified analytical laboratory. The samples were analyzed for:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline and diesel (TPH-g and TPH-d) in
' accordance with EPA Method 8015 Modified,
• Volatile aromatic hydrocarbons - benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and total xylenes(BTEX)
' in accordance with EPA Method 8020; and
• Oxygenated fuel additive compounds - di-isopropyl ether (DIPS), ethyl tertiary-butyl ether
(ETBE), MTBE, tertiary-amyl methyl ether(TAME) and tertiary butanol (TBA), methanol,
' ethanol, ethylene dibromide (EDB) and 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) in accordance with. .
EPA Method 8260, respectively.
1
