HYDROCARBON-IMPACTED SOIL
. VOLUME ASSUMPTIONS AND CALCULATIONS
tVolume of impacted soil removed from the vicinity of the former UST during the over-excavation
procedures:'
Based on the hydrocarbon concentration of TPH-d in excavated stockpile soil samples and highest
concentration of TPH-d in soil at the base of the over excavation,-the following calculation for the
' removed the petroleum as diesel has been made.
The impacted soil from the spoil stockpile and UST excavation had the following concentrations:
' OXSP1 - 72 mg/kg, OXSP2- 1,320 mg/kg, OXSP3 - 1,330 mg/kg,OXSP4 -4,760 mg/kg and tank
sample T1M18 feet - 2,380 mg/kg.
' This volume was calculated from soil sample data and the wight of the soil stockpiled from the
excavations. A total of 184 tons of impacted soil were disposed with an average concentration of
1,975 milligrams per kilogram of diesel.
Calculation:
tons • 2000ounds/ton= ounds'soil
P P .
pounds soil • 0.454 kilograms/lbs =kilograms soil
' kilograms soil • average concentration in mg/kg of diesel =milligrams of.diesel
milligrams of diesel _ 1,000 milligram/grams = grams of diesel
volume
' grams of diesel 0.85 grams/6m3 = cm3 of diesel
(cm3 of diesel - 3,785 cm"gallon) = gallons of diesel removed
' weight
184 tons removed • 2000 pounds/ton = 368,000 pounds soil
368,000 pounds soil • 0.454 kilograms/lbs = 167,072 kilograms soil
'
167,072 kilograms soil • 1975 mg/kg of diesel = 299,894,240 milligrams of diesel
g g g
' 299,894,240 milligrams of diesel - 1,000 milligram/grams = 299,894 grams of diesel
_ volume
' .299,894 grams of diesel 0.85 grams/cm3 = 352,816 cm3 of diesel
(352,8.16 cm3 of diesel = 3,785 cm'/gallon)'= 93 gallons of diesel removed
' Advanced CeeoEnvironmental,Inc.
1
