3 October 1995
AGE-NC Project No 95-0103
23 ASSESSMENT OF IMPACTED SOEL AND GROUND WATER
In December 1990, one ground water monitoring well (MW-1) was installed at the site by Roger
Foott Associates, Inc The presence of hydrocarbon-impacted sods was confirmed in soil samples
collected during the installation of MW-1 A ground water sample from the well indicated that total
petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH as gasoline) and volatile aromatics (benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene
and xylenes BTE&X) were present in ground water
Four soil borings were drilled by SEACOR at the site in 1993 Three of the borings were completed
as 2-inch diameter ground water monitoring wells(MW-2 through MW-4) The fourth boring was
completed as a 4-inch diameter vapor extraction well (VW-1)
Low concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons were detected in soil samples from MW-3, MW-4
and VW-1 No hydrocarbons were detected in soil samples from MW-2 To further delineate the
impacted sod, eight additional sod bonngs were drilled in March 1994 The assessment activities were
detailed in the Problem Assessment Report (PAR) prepared by SEACOR
3.0. QUARTERLY MONITORING AND SAMPLING PROCEDURES
3 1 MONITORING WELL PURGE PROCEDURES
On 29 July 1995,the water level in each well was measured relative to the top of the casing using a
Solinst water level meter (Table 1) Free product was encountered in wells MW-1 and MW-4 An
interface probe was used to measure the free product thickness
After water levels were measured, approximately 6 to 8 gallons of water(a mirumum of three well
volumes) were evacuated from MW-2 through MW-4 using pre-cleaned PVC bailers, while
approximately 25 gallons of water was evacuated from MW-1 utilizing an ES-60 Purge Pump
Temperature, pH and conductivity were measured at one-gallon intervals using an ICM model 52200
water analyzer Stabilization data and field logs are included in Appendix A Purged water was stored
in 55-gallon drums The drums were stored adjacent to the site on property owned by Mr Russell
Chapin
3 2 FREE PRODUCT REMOVAL
I
A disposable bailer was used to remove free product from MW-1 and MW-4 Approximately two
gallons of water-product mixture were removed from each well and placed in a 55-gallon drums
i
