01 March 1999
AGE-NC Project No. 95-0103
The purge pump was washed in an Alconox solution and rinsed with tap water prior to purging each
well. Purged water was stored in 55-gallon drums on the site. Field measurements of purged ground
water are included in Appendix A.
2.3. GROUND WATER SAMPLE COLLECTION
Water samples were retrieved from each purged well using new disposable bailers. The samples
were transferred into 40-m1 EPA-approved VOA vials containing 0.5 ml hydrochloric acid (18%)
_ as a sample preservative, and three samples were collected in one-liter amber bottles. The samples
were transported in a chilled container under chain-of-custody to McCampbell Analytical, Inc.
(MAI) a state-certified laboratory in Pacheco, California for chemical laboratory analyses, and the
three one-liter samples were transported in a chilled container under chain-of-custody to an
independent microbiologist, A. Keith Kaufman. Samples were analyzed for:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline (TPH-g) in accordance with EPA
Method 8015 Modified,
_ 0 Volatile aromatic compounds(benzene,toluene,ethyl-benzene and total xylenes: BTEX)and
methyl-tert-butyl ether (MTBE) in accordance with EPA Method 8020,
_ • Oxygenating fuel additives tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA), di-isopropyl ether (DIPE), methyl-
tert-butyl ether (MTBE), ethyl tertiary butyl ether (ETBE) and tertiary amyl methyl ether
(TAME) in accordance with EPA Method 8260 Modified and
• Bio-enumeration and physicochemical analysis.
2.4. SPARGINGIEXTRACTION SYSTEM OPERATION AND MONITORING
The in-situ air sparging(IAS)system operated continually during the quarter. The sparging flow rate
was adjusted to approximately 9 to 10 scfm or to a minimum pressure of 12 psi. During each
monitoring event, the depth to ground water and percent dissolved oxygen were measured in each
_ monitoring well (Table 3). General system maintenance, including a compressor valve-set
replacement and adjustments were performed during the quarter.
The flow rate of extracted vapor was measured using a Dwyer differential pressure flow meter.
Organic vapor concentrations in the extracted soil-vapor stream were measured before entering the
_ blower using an organic vapor meter (OVM) equipped with a photo-ionization detector (PID:
Thermo Environmental 580A, I0.0eV, calibrated to isobutylene).
Adranced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
