Les Smith
Kause Construction
411 Main Strcct, Suite E
16, SuisiiD, CA 94585
Sabje-ct: MATERIALS TESTMG SERVICES
KENT'S OIL SERVICE
STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA
. Dear Mr. Smit}i:
This letter is to confirm our recent discussion reg2xding materials testing services at the K.-at's
r Oil Service facility on Miticr Street in Slocktort, Cahfomia. As you ate aware, we have
previously been under contract with Brown and Caldwell to provide geotechnical st rvices for
utas pro*t. In our letters dated July 13, and August 25, 1993 recotnlneLdhtioru were
provided to Browu and Caldwell regarding the backfill of the excavation at the Kent Oil
facility.
Fven tl)ougb the excavation has extended to the d-.Vih of approximately 45 feet, we understand .
that some contamination still remains in the bottom of the excavation, Apparently, San Joaquin
County Environmewal Health has requested that several feet of clay material be Pla",ed at the
bottom of the excavatioi; to act sz)niewhat like a liner. 'We bave concerns regarding the
operation of equipment and the placement of men in the base of the excavation. For safety
reasons we suggest that a plastie liner be comidcred jn lie i of clay material. Since the levcl
Of eontarr:inatiln apparently is relatively low, :ve suggest that multi layers of 6 or 10 mil
vIsqucon. with pioper overlapping and caulked scants be considered.
We understand tk at once the plastic liner is in place, that approximately 20 feet of free-drainin
gravel, will be placed in the excavation. Prior to tine placement of fill on the gravel, we
,ecommend that a large vibrating steel druni compactor be used to densify the gravel. We
kvic assumed that the remainder of the backfill will be placed at approximate 1 foot lifts and
that our tecbniciaa would be scheduled to visit the site every 2 feet of backfill. This would
,.. allow our technician to excavate 12 inches below subgrade and tvaluatc Ol c lower lift. For
estimating purposes we have assumes{ approximately 0 trip. Eo the site would be necessary
since be depths of backfill will be. approximately 25 feet. We have also assumed that tvo
laboratory compaction curves would be needed as well as some supervision and a fuial report.
.r
Copyright 1993 K`,einftLder, Inc.
