S
Health and Safety Plan
Underground Tank Investigation
INTRODUCTION
f.
4' PURPOSE AND SCOPE
The Health and Safety Plan, for contaminated soil re-excavation resampie
provides for the protection of on-site personnel and the surrounding
community during site characterization activities. The requirements,
€'a specifications and procedures presented with this plan will apply to all
s personnel on-site, including employees, sub-contractors, site visitors and
regulatory agency personnel.
E;
KEY PERSONNEL
HAZARD ANALYSIS
f The most significant risk associated with.petroleum contaminated soil is
exposure to aromatic compounds. Skin contact will be eliminated by use of
clothing, eye wear, and gloves and the inhalation hazard tai7.l be minimized
using appropriate respiratory protective devices as determined by .on
air monitoring. The Safety Coordinator•/Pro,ject Manager will establish an
exclusion zone encompassing a 50 foot radius from the work area. Access
within this zone will be limited to required personnel. . Total organic
.vapors will be monitored within the exclusion zone using a photoionizativn
T detector {PID} calibrated for, benzene the most toxic of the aromatic. I '
z qhydrocarbons. Current enforceable and recommended exposure limitations
1 for potential site contaminants are presented in Table 1.
i
•
