SOP #12
Date:9/1/93
3.0
PURPOSE AND SCOPE
The purpose of this document is to define the standard operating procedure (SOP)
for conducting_cone penetration testing (CPT) techniques. CPT offers an alternative,
or a supplement, to conventional drilling methods by enabling rapid, high quality
subsurface exploration and sampling, while significantly reducing site disturbance
and waste generation. CPT techniques also allow for the collection of relatively
detailed stratigraphic and hydrogeologic data.
The ultimate goal of CPT sampling is to obtain data and samples that meet
acceptable standards of accuracy, precision, comparability, representativeness, and
completeness. In this SOP, all steps that could affect tracking, documentation, or
integrity of samples have been explained in sufficient detail to allow different
sampling personnel to collect samples that are equally reliable and consistent. The
following items will be discussed in detail in the procedure section of this SOP:
• CPT investigation techniques
• Soil sampling
• Ground water sampling
• Soil and ground water disposal
Specifically, the procedures section describes the equipment, field procedures,
sample containers, storage and holding times, decontamination, documentation,
and field QA/QC procedures necessary to conduct CPT investigations and sampling
at the Old Hammer Field. The step-by-step procedures are described in sufficient
detail to allow field personnel to obtain CPT data of sufficient integrity and to ensure
representative soil and ground water sample collection.
This SOP serves as a supplement to the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP). It
serves as a reference to project workplans and applies to all CPT investigation and
sample collection by ERM-West, Inc., personnel or their subcontractors. This plan is
to be followed strictly, and any modification to the procedure shall be approved by
the Project Manager or Task Leader in advance. Where SOP modification is
planned in advance, Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) concurrence
