Bioremedial enhancement of hydrocarbon destruction was provided during pile
construction First, approximately 100 pounds of 10-10-10 fertilizer were added to the soil to
furnish nitrogen, then approximately 50 pounds of Solmar Advanced Bio Culture 1.-104 was
mixed with water and added to the soil pile _
Generally, the F EVEITO system operates by drawing hydrocarbon-Iaden air from the
treatment pile through a moisture separator and particulate filter with a vacuum blower. The
influent is then exposed to temperatures in excess of 1,400 degrees fahrenheit in the thermal
oxidizer for a period of time sufficient to essentially destroy (99 percent) volatile hydrocarbons
Due to the high percentage of destruction, virtually no emissions are discharged to the
atmosphere.
Prior to discharge, the hot thermal oxidizer exhaust is passed through a ceramic heat
exchanger where the incoming stream of fresh air is heated prior to reinjection into the
treatment pile Heating the pile enhances hydrocarbon volatilization and speeds biologic activity
Drawing 3-2 is a schematic of the HEVEi TO process operation
3 12 Treatment Monitoring
After system start-up, the vapors exiting each extraction pipe (but before treatment) were
monitored for petroleum hydrocarbons using a PID and carbon dioxide meter on a uniform
scheduled basis Soil samples collected from random depths within the pile were periodically
monitored with the PID and IAP Once monitoring data indicated that no further hydrocarbons
were being extracted, the HEVE/TO process was terminated
3 13 Confirmation Sampling and Analyses
Upon completion of the treatment process, confirmation soil samples were collected from
. locations within the pile as indicated on Drawing 3-4 using an Arts' sampler.
