1
of TPH and BTEX will be conducted In addition, groundwater and soil
sampling will be performed to assure required hydrocarbon Ievels have
been achieved
' 3 3 Soil Excavation and Remediation
Subsequent to the removal of the former fuel storage tanks, soil sampling
results indicated that certain areas in the tank pits still contained soil with
elevated hydrocarbon concentrations Prior to beginning soil remediation,
additional soil will be removed from the tank pits These soil will be
sampled and analyzed on site using an immuno-assay technique
The excavated soil will be treated for removal and destruction of
' petroleum hydrocarbons by a process called Heat Enhanced Vapor
Extraction/Thermal Oxidation (HEVE/TO) To accomplish this process,
soil to be treated is assembled into a treatment pile as illustrated in
[ Drawing 2-4 During the construction of the soil treatment pile a network
of air injection and vapor extraction piping will be placed within the soil
pile Hot air injection pipes are 3/4 inch internal diameter steel with 1/8
inch holes Air extraction pipes are 3 inch internal diameter PVC with 1/8
inch slots The piping is placed on approximately 6 foot centers,
horizontally and vertically during the pile construction The treatment pile
size is limited to the reach of the excavator such that the pile only
experiences gravity compaction In order to provide for enhanced
biodegradation, inorganic fertilizer is spread on the soil with each lift
' After assembly, the treatment pile is covered with plastic sheeting to avoid
fugitive hydrocarbon emissions and rainwater intrusion
In conjunction with the treatment pile construction, the mobile HEVE/TO
treatment system will be transported to the site and necessary installation
activities will be conducted The schematic of the HEVE/TO treatment
system is shown in Drawing 2-3 The entire setup process, including
treatment pile construction, installation of piping network, utilities hook-
up, and HEVE/TO connection and testing is anticipated to take
' approximately 5 days
Soil Treatment - The HEVE/TO treatment unit is scheduled to operate
continuously for two to three weeks The schedule may vary depending
on the results of organic vapor analyzer tests on air samples obtained from
the vapor extraction lines and soil pile analytical results obtained
periodically during the treatment process Soil samples collected during
treatment will be for a quantitative immuno-assay test of petroleum
hydrocarbons Based on the results of the above described screening tests,
the HEVE/TO treatment unit operate for a longer or a shorter period
' 3-3
COMPANY CONFIDENTIAL TRADE SECRET AND PROPRIETARY INFORMATION OF THE MARK GROUP Mir
r
