Rally's Stockton Work Plan 6
Project No. 91349.A
STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES
RALLY'S STOCKTON SITE INVESTIGATION
DRY GROUND PROTOCOL
SOP 1 Check off all of the Supplies prior to leaving for the site.
SOP 2 Do a final utility clearance. If an initial utility inspection has been
done, simply look for USA markings. Different colors are used to indicate the
different types of utility lines. If an initial utility inspection has not been done,
inspect the site according to the preliminary information protocol section.
SOP 3 Establish a safety zone around the work area delineating the
boundaries with cones and caution tape. No smoking or sparks are permitted
within the safety zone, and keep curious people out of the safety zone.
SOP 4 Calibrate the Field Instruments (PID). Different instruments calibrate
to different gasses. Make sure the calibration gas is correct for the instrument
and record the calibration readings in the soil log and in the field notebook.
SOP 5 - Place a 10-foot square of 6-mil plastic over the sample location to
collect drill cuttings. Do LEL and PID readings immediately downwind of the
sample points, and at the 5- to 6-foot level (breathing space) in the work area.
LEL readings above 20% anywhere in the work area warrants shutting the job
down. Refer to the Safety Plan for hydrocarbon levels and safety protocol.
SOP 6 Collect samples every two feet for head-space readings. To take
head space readings, use a spade or trowel and remove a sample from the
backhoe bucket taken from the desired level. Weigh out 30 grams of soil and
place the soil into a clean Mason jar. Add 100 ml of water to the jar, cover the
opening with aluminum foil and cap the jar with the screw-ring. Shake the
covered jar for one-minute (If the outside temperature is less than 75°F, place
the jars on the warm hood of the pickup or the backhoe for 3 to 5 minutes prior
to shaking). Tilt the jar and insert the PID tip into the upper end of the jar just
penetrating the aluminum foil. Do not stick the tip into the soil, record the
highest PID reading obtained within a few seconds.
SOP 7 Check the soil in the excavation for signs of hydrocarbons. If
ground water is encountered in the excavation, refer to the ground water
protocol section. If groundwater is suspected within five feet of the bottom of
