Rally's Stockton Work Plan 13
Project No. 91349.A
SOP 12 If samples are collected using a bailer, they should be transferred
from the bailer to the sample containers by means of a disposable VOWs
sampling port. A separate sampling port should be used for each well. Pour
from the sampler very slowly and do not create bubbles in the VOA sample
containers.
SOP 13 To insure sample integrity, each vial should be filled with the
sampled water such that a meniscus stands above the lip of the container
(positive meniscus). The cap should then be quickly placed on the vial, turned
approximately 30 degrees, and gently push down on the teflon liner indent with
one finger to force any air out, and tighten securely. TAKE CARE NOT TO
OVER-TIGHTEN THE LIDS - THEY WILL BREAK! The 40 ml vials should then
be checked to ensure that air bubbles are not present prior to labeling of the
sample. Invert the vial and check for a bubble to rise, if air bubbles are present
in any of the 40-ml vials, the samples are not valid and should be discarded.
Additional valid samples should then be taken.
SOP 14 Label information should include a sample identification number, job
identification, date, time, and type of analysis requested.
SOP 15 The sample containers should immediately be placed in protective
packaging such as styrofoam or foam to avoid breakage during shipment, and
placed in high quality coolers for shipment to the laboratory. The coolers
should be packed with sufficient ice or freezer packs to ensure that the samples
are kept below 4°C.
WARNING - The freezing temperature of dry ice is much lower than that
of ordinary ice, so do not use dry ice to ship water samples - the water
will freeze and break the sample containers.
SOP 16 Chain-of-custody forms should be completed and checked by the
project manager prior to shipping to the laboratory.
SOP 17 Samples should immediately be sent to the laboratory for analysis.
Ship via courier or by next morning express service to ensure the samples arrive
the morning following sampling. This is necessary to ensure the HOLD-TIME,
or the time that the sample remains within EPA time limits for analysis on
normal (low cost) turn-around.
