Woodward-Clyde
Consultants
Mr. James L. Tjosvold
California - Environmental Protection Agency
July 28, 1995
Page 4
Wells MW-2, MW-4, and MW-5 at the Field Avenue site and wells MW-1 through MW-5,
MW-14, MW-14D, MW-15, and MW-30 at the Navy Drive site were decommissioned by
the pressure grouting method. The pressure grouting method is conducted by placing a
pressurized seal and grout pipe at the top of the well casing. Once the seal is in place, neat
cement grout is pumped into the well casing under pressure. The grout mixture is brought
to surface level, then the seal is removed from the well casing. Once the mixture has
hardened, the surface completion christy box well enclosure is removed. The top of the well
casing is then cut approximately 1 foot bgs. The top of the well enclosure is then filled with
grout mixture to surface level.
CONCLUSIONS
No obstructions were found in the 17 groundwater monitoring wells at the two former Lika
facilities. Five wells (MW-1 and MW-3 at Field Avenue, and MW-6, MW-16, and MW-
16D at Navy Drive) were decommissioned by placing a continuous pour of neat cement
grout mixture within the well casings. The remaining twelve wells (MW-2, MW-4, and
MW-5 at Field Avenue,and MW-1 through MW-5,MW-14,MW-14D,MW-15, and MW-30
at Navy Drive) were decommissioned by pressure grouting methods. All of the surface
completions were removed (except for MW-3 at Field Avenue) and filled with neat cement
grout. All of the well abandonments were approved by Ms. Diane Hinson of San Joaquin
County, Environmental Health Division. Please provide written approval of the well
decommissioning activities and closure for the 1856 Field Avenue and 2041 Navy Drive sites
in Stockton, California.
If you have any questions regarding this letter report, please call me or Jay Kamine at (916)
368-0988.
Very truly yours,
WOODWARD-CLYDE
William Loskutoff
Geologist
90189NUKA.REP(07-28-95)SAC
