A photionization detector (PID will fie used to evaluate the presence of hydrocarbon
vapors in soil samples. Field instruments, such as the PID, are useful for indicating
relative levels of volatile organic hydr Icarbon vapors but do not detect the concentration
of hydrocarbons present with the same precision as laboratory analyses.
Sampling of Stockpiled Soil
The drill cuttings will be temporarily stored on on-site in a soil bin before disposal at an
appropriate disposal facility. Soil samples will be collected from the stockpiled soil by
driving a clean brass sleeve into the stockpiled soil. Once filled, the sleeve will be
promptly sealed with Teflon tape and plastic caps. The sample will then be labeled and
placed in iced storage. Chain-of-custody records will be initiated by the geologist and
accompany the samples to the analytical laboratory.
Logging of Borings
Soil samples will be logged using the Unified Soil Classification System. The texture,
color, moisture, plasticity, and consist, of soil, the blow counts, and subjective
evidence of hydrocarbons, such as soil staining, obvious product odor, and PID
(or similar instrument)readings, will be>poted in the field on the logs of borings.
Groundwater Monitoring Well Construction
The groundwater monitoring wells will be constructed in the borings with thread jointed,
2-inch-inner-diameter, Schedule 40 PUC casing. No chemical cements, glues, or
solvents will be used in well construction-The screened portion of the wells will consist
of a factory-perforated casing with 0.020 ch-wide slots. The annular space in the wells
will be packed with#3 sand (or equivalent)to approximately I to 2 feet above the slotted
interval. A 2-foot-thick bentonite plug will be added above the sand pack to prevent the
cement from entering the well pack. The remaining annulus will be backfilled to grade
with bentonite cement slurry.
The wells will be protected with a traffic-rated, utility box, equipped with a bolt down
lid and a watertight seal to protect against surface-water infiltration. The design of this
box discourages vandalism and reduces the possibility of accidental disturbance of the
well.
C:\iMyDocuments\Projccts\portofStockton\WellInstall\workpI .doe
A-2 Rev.0,4/9
