The Report discusses the results of 10 direct push borings to
collect grab groundwater samples and the installation of monitoring well MW-35. Although
MW-35 was installed downgradient of borings with no or low detections of constituents of
concern, the sample from MW-35 has detections of total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline and
diesel, tertiary butyl alcohol, and di-isopropyl ether. Shell recommends sampling MW-35 for
four quarters to determine if additional monitoring wells are needed.
Regional Board staff concurs with the recommendations in the Report. In the 2003 Annual
Report, due 30 January 2004, Shell needs to include a discussion of the extent of petroleum
pollution, the effects of the groundwater pump and treat system on the extent of the plume, and
whether additional monitoring wells are needed.
