The QMR discusses the groundwater monitoring
activities conducted in November 2001 and summarizes the groundwater monitoring results and
remedial activities for 2001. The Report describes the well abandonment, replacement, and
development activities performed in January and February 2002. The Report proposes not to replace
abandoned well MW-17 based on the proximity of three monitoring wells screened in the same
monitoring zone. Equiva was unable to remove the blockage in MW-1, and the permanent steel
structure around the well prevents well abandonment. The Report recommends continuing to extract
from MW-1 because the blockage is in the bottom four feet of the well, adding monitoring wells MW-10
and MW-15 to the groundwater extraction and treatment system(GWETS), and installing monitoring
well MW-34 now that Equiva has obtained the access agreement.
We concur with the proposed activities and recommendations. Equiva must ensure that extracting from
additional wells does not exceed the flow or effluent limits in National Pollution Discharge Elimination
System General Order No. 5-00-11912. By 31 May 2002, please provide a well installation report. The
next quarterly monitoring report is due by 30 April 2002.
