Box 388
Stockton, CA 95201-0388
Subject: Monitoring Well MW-21 Evaluation and Recommendations, Lincoln Center, Stockton,
California
Dear Ms. Meays:
On behalf of the Settling Dry Cleaning Defendants, Levine-Fricke-Recon Inc. (LFR) is
transmitting the attached report, entitled "Monitoring Well MW-21 Evaluation and
Recommendations, Lincoln Center, Stockton, California," dated October 16, 1997. This report
describes the investigation work performed to evaluate the integrity of well MW-21, including
details of the installation, development, and sampling of a set of nested replacement wells (MW-
203B-1,2,3). The replacement wells were installed approximately 20 feet upgradient of MW-21
for the purpose of assessing the vertical distribution of Hazardous Substances in the B-zone aquifer
near well MW-21.
As described in the attached report, LFR recommends that well MW-21 be abandoned. This letter
described the proposed procedures to abandon well MW-21.
Well History
Well MW-21 was drilled to a total depth of 149 feet below ground surface (bgs) using the mud-
rotary drilling method (Kennedy/Jenks Consultants 1991). The borehole was backfilled from 149
feet bgs to a depth of 117 feet bgs using filter pack material. The well was constructed from 117
feet bgs to the ground surface using a 5-inch-inner-diameter steel casing with a screened interval
extending from 97 to 117 feet bgs. A conductor casing was not installed in this well.
Well Abandonment Method
To successfully abandon this well, the steel casing must be removed and the entire borehole must
be overreamed to remove the filter pack and cement grout materials. Once overreamed, the
borehole will then be grouted to the ground surface using neat cement.
1900 Powell Street, 12th Floor, Emeryville, California 94608-1827 • (510) 652-4500 • fax (510) 652-2246
Offices Worldwide
