(LFR) is conducting an environmental investigation at Lincoln Center, located on the west side of Pacific Avenue, across the street from the property at 6632 Pacific Avenue ("the subject property"). The subject property is the site of a former Safeway store. The investigation is being conducted on behalf of the Settling Dry Cleaning Defendants (SDCDs), who are currently responsible for performing the work. The purpose of the work is to evaluate soil and groundwater contamination that is associated with historical dry cleaning operations at Lincoln Center. As part of the investigation, LFR conducted an inventory of public and private wells located within a one-mile radius of Lincoln Center. Ms. Karen Darnell of Safeway's Public Affairs Office suggested we contact you regarding this request. LFR is requesting information on the status of a well that was reportedly installed on the subject property, currently occupied by Michael's Arts and Crafts. A Water Well Drillers Report obtained from public records indicates that a well was installed by Clark Well Drilling Company at the Safeway store formerly located on the subject property. The well was reportedly installed in 1958 to a total depth of 244 feet below ground surface (bgs) and was perforated from 224 to 240 feet bgs. A sanitary seal was reportedly installed to a depth of 42 feet bgs. The specific location of the well was not indicated on the report. However, a drawing attached to a sanitation permit filed in 1961 indicates that the well was located on the south side of the former Safeway store. We have attached copies of the Water Well Drillers Report, notes from Clark Well Drilling Company, the sanitation permit, and the drawing for your review. LFR contacted the current property owner who has no knowledge of the existence or status of this well. We contacted the store manager for Michael's Arts and Crafts who was also unaware of a well located on the subject property. In addition, we inspected the parking lot and did not find evidence of a well on the property. We reviewed aerial photographs of the former Safeway store building and compared them to the current building occupied by Michael's Arts and Crafts. Based on this comparison, the building occupied by the former Safeway store appears to have been expanded or rebuilt.
