Harding Lawson Associates
2.0 PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF WORK
The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the vertical extent of petroleum
hydrocarbons in the soil beneath a former fuel dispenser area, and to assess the potential
impact of any detectable petroleum hydrocarbons in the'soil to groundwater.
All work was conducted in general accordance with the RWQCB guidelines as
outlined in the State Water Resources Control Board's Leaking Underground Fuel Tank
(LUFT) Field Manual dated October 1989, and the Regional Board Staff
Recommendations for Initial Evaluation and Investigation of Underground Tanks
August 10, 1990 revision. The scope of work comprised the following tasks.
Literature Review - Records Search: This task consisted of conducting a
literature review and records search to ascertain the local hydrogeologic
F
conditions. The purpose of this task was to provide information on local
subsurface geologic formations and depth to groundwater-at the site. This
information was used to assess the threat to groundwater from any detectable
petroleum hydrocarbons in the soil. Additionally, HLA personnel interviewed
Levine-Fricke staff to determine whether petroleum hydrocarbon bearing soils
underneath the former dispenser were removed or buried in place.
Soil Excavation: This task consisted of excavating soil containing elevated
concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons from underneath and in the vicinity of
the former dispenser. The purpose of this excavation was to remove the soil
containing petroleum hydrocarbons, and therefore reduce the threat of these
chemicals migrating to the groundwater, and impacting the groundwater quality.
TI9461-H 2 of 20
i:
