Fourth Quarter 2004
Thrifty#172
January 19, 2004
Page 3
ethanol must continue to be analyzed for since it is a fuel additive at the site The SJCEHD
further required that ethanol must be analyzed by EPA Method 8015
Remediation Status
Vapor Extraction System
On April 26, 2001, a new Baker Furnace Thermal Oxidizer Unit was placed into operation with
the hour meter reading at zero Presently, the remediation system is connected to soil vapor
extraction wells VW-1, VW-2 (A,B), VW-3, VW-4 (A,B,C), VW-5 (A,B,C), and VW-6 (A,B,C)
as shown on Figure 6
During the fourth quarter of 2004, the soil vapor extraction unit (VEU) was down due to a
problem with the extraction blower motor Thrifty sent the motor out for repair or replacement
and recently was informed that the blower needed to be replaced Thrifty anticipates having the
blower replaced and the VEU restarted by the end of January 2005 As of December 28, 2004, a
• total of 92,537 pounds of hydrocarbons have been removed by the VEU (Table 3) Field Status
Reports are included in Appendix C
A historical summary of hydrocarbons removed by vapor extraction is presented in Table 3, vapor
sample analytical results for the individual wells sampling are presented in Table 5
Groundwater Treatment System
The groundwater treatment system was started in conjunction with the vapor treatment system on
April 26, 2001, and the flow meter started at zero Presently, the remediation system is
connected to groundwater well MW-11 A down-well pneumatic pump draws water into a 150-
gallon polyvinyl tank, which then transfers the water through two (2) one thousand-pound
granular activated carbon canisters in series
During the reporting period, the system was shut down from October 1, 2004 and restarted
October 5, 2004 for replacement of a sensor The system was shut down for carbon change out
on the following dates October 13, 2004through Octoberl9, 2004, November 9, 2004 through
November 18, 2004, and December 14 through December 21, 2004 A total of 34,422 gallons of
water were treated and discharged during the reporting period, and 364,164 gallons had been
treated and discharged since the commencement of groundwater treatment Historical
groundwater system operations are reported in Table 4a and 4b, and the quarterly analytical
results are presented in Appendix D
