Thank you for your thorough review and ,P4 m
constructive comments: This correspondence addresses the following seven comments
outlined in your fax correspondence of March 10, 1999.
1. In order to expedite the public participation notification process, a one-page summary of
the goals, processes and potential hazards associated with the proposed work is attached.
2. After consulting with a shoring contractor and a visit to the site with the contractor,
Wright Environmental recommends that the excavation be shored on all four sides using
slide-rail E&S linear shoring. To facilitate the installation of-this shoring system and to
reduce cost, the width of the excavation will be reduced from 25 feet to 20 feet. This
reduction in excavation area will not significantly sacrifice the remedial efforts.
Incorporating excavation objectives-and site and subsurface logistical conditions, the
shoring system and excavation will be designed and certified by a state of California
registered civil engineer.
3. Groundwater pumped from the excavation will be stored in a rented water storage tank
for temporary storage on site. All of the pumped water will be discharged.into the first
water storage tank for sediment collection and control. Additional water tanks will be
used, if needed. Once the de-watering is complete, any separate-phase diesel will be
removed with floating absorbant pads. The remaining liquid will be sampled and
analyzed for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH)-as-diesel; TPH-as-gasoline, benzene,
ethylbenzene, toluene, and xylenes(BTEX). Based on the results of the analytical !
testing, a carbon filtration system will be designed to treat the water prior to sewer
discharge. To confirm that the discharge has been effectively treated, effluent water
samples will also be collected for analysis. 'Effluent water samples will also be analyzed
for-TPH-as-diesel, TPH-as-gasoline and BTEX.
67 E. 10th Street ♦ Tracy,CA 95376
209.833.0758 ♦ Fax 209.832.5152
wright@inreach.com Lic. #651501 A-B HaWai
websit hup://home.inreach.comhvright
a
