T
Angelica Sandoval Marin [EH]
From: Vicki McCartney [EH]
Sent: Wednesday, December 24, 2014 8:04 AM
To: Angelica Sandoval Marin [EH]
Subject: FW: Equipment blanks
Angelica,
See Dot's remarks about an equipment blank.
Vicki McCartney, Senior REHS
San Joaquin County
Environmental Health Department
1868 East Hazelton Avenue
Stockton, California 95205
Phone: (209) 468-9852
Email: vmccartney(aa)sicehd com
j
t//
-3 rp 4p N'
From: Lofstrom, Dot@DTSC [mailto•Dot.Lofstrom@dtsc ca gov]
Sent: Tuesday, December 23, 2014 4:42 PM
To: Vicki McCartney [EH]
Subject: RE: Another question
Keep in mind the purpose of the equipment blank. It's to protect the sampler, not the environment. If the sampler
chooses not to do an equipment blank, it's not really a concern to the regulator. However, if something shows up in the
analysis that cannot be explained, and there is no equipment blank, then the site will have to be resampled. I'm thinking
in particular about a site I had that had unexplained hits of 1,3 butadiene. Subsequently, I've learned that this is often a
false positive that is associated with tubing. If we had done an equipment blank,we may have picked up this
contaminant, and then we would have known it came from the tubing. As it was,the RP had to go back out to the site
and resample.
So, if you have someone who is protesting that they don't want or need to do an equipment blank, I would let it go. It
protects the RP, nothing else.
Dot
From: Vicki McCartney [EH] [mailto:vmccartney(alsjcehd com]
Sent: Tuesday, December 23, 2014 4:30 PM
To: Lofstrom, Dot@DTSC
Subject: Another question
Hi Dot,
This question is about equipment blanks for soil gas sampling. If the tubing and probe tip have been checked as a
material blank, then is it necessary to collect an equipment blank on the day of the soil gas sampling event? The soil gas
probes were installed last week. I don't believe there is any equipment being reused during the soil gas sampling.
Thanks for your help.
Vicki McCartney, Senior REHS
1
